How To Clean Your Mattress

If you are to name a few household items that are cleaned very rarely, then mattress would be on the top of the list. Though it is one accessory without which we can’t have a relaxing day at home we seldom pay attention to cleaning it. Do you know that mattress can get dirty really fast? Yes, the dead skin of our body, hair, sweat all can make the mattress a powerhouse of germs.

Vacuuming is one of the common methods of cleaning the mattress. While vacuuming, remember to vacuum the top, bottom, and sides to suck out all mites. In addition to this, there are various mattress cleaning products that are commercially available that can suck out the dirt and odour from the mattress and make it look new.

But if you are all for green and organic cleaning, there are a few combinations of products you can try out.

Baking soda and essential oil: Baking soda, as you all know, is a universal cleaner. Combine this with a few drops of essential oil to make a cleaner cum deodorizer. Sprinkle the baking soda onto the mattress and let it sit for some time. Vacuum clean thoroughly after a few hours. For best result use mint based essential oil like peppermint, eucalyptus, and wintergreen essential oil.

Baking soda and liquid soap: Did your little one mess up the mattress? Do not worry. Mix baking soda, a few drops of liquid soap and a cup of hydrogen peroxide. Spray it on the stained area. Let the solution air dry completely.

Baking soda and vinegar: This is the best combination for removing the blood stain from the mattress. First, bloat the area dry with a plain cloth. Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and spray vinegar. Leave for some time and clean with cold water. Repeat if required.

Talcum powder and water: This combination can be used to remove the blood stain. Once the moisture of the stain is dabbed using a clean cloth, apply a paste of talcum powder and water. Let it dry completely. Vacuum clean thoroughly.

White vinegar and water: This is the best combination for removing vomit stain from the mattress. Make a solution of an equal quantity of white vinegar and water. Spray it on the stained area. Blot it dry with a clean towel. Repeat this until the stain is completely removed.

Lemon juice and salt: This combination works best on a stain. Make a mixture of lemon juice and salt and apply it over the stain. Leave it for an hour. Clean the area with a damp cloth.

Cleaning a mattress is not an easy task. The best way to keep the mattress neat and clean is by using a mattress cover. This not only keeps dust mites away from the mattress but also prevents spills and stains from seeping deep inside the mattress and spoiling it.
