Long Live Baking Soda

We are sure that you already know that baking soda doesn’t only exist for baking purposes. It’s a strong and natural cleaning product which you can use to clean almost anything you can think of. Here is a list of what you can do with baking soda. Bookmark or print, choose your way to keep it somewhere easy to find.

Unclogging a drain: There is no magic that baking soda can’t do when it comes to cleaning. Pour hot water into the drain and add a generous quantity of baking soda. Let it sit for some time. Then pour a mixture of vinegar and hot water and cover it. The mixture of baking soda and vinegar helps to unclog the drain. Flush it down with hot water.

Make your iron brand-new again: Place baking soda on a paper towel drenched with vinegar and start ironing, with the iron off! Once you think it is clean enough put your iron on steam, you will see baking soda stuck in the holes come off. Repeat it until it’s all gone.

Clean your toilet with fizzies: To make these balls you will need 1½ cups baking soda, ½ cup citric acid, 1 orange, zested, 25 drops orange essential oil or lemon essential oil, 24 drops lavender essential oil, 1-2 tsp water. Clean the bowl with the toilet brush and flush.

Make your oven shine: You can use a mixture made with baking soda to clean your oven. Mix 1/4 cup castile soap, 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup salt and warm water. Stir until it makes a paste. Apply it inside the oven and wait overnight. Remove it with a sponge and warm water. To finish you can use white vinegar.

Clean your washing machine: The main purpose of the machine is to clean but this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t require cleaning itself. To give it the cleaning it deserves add baking soda into the detergent compartment of the machine and white vinegar in the drum. Run a cycle at high temperature. This will remove all the mould and bad odor from inside the machine.

Deodorise your carpet: If you have pets at home you most likely to be driven crazy by the smell they leave on the carpets. Even if you don’t have furry friends at home this trick will help you to deodorise your carpet. Sprinkle baking soda on it and let it sit for a few hours. Vacuum clean the carpet thoroughly. Repeat if required.

Air your mattress: Mix 5 tablespoons of baking soda and 5 drops of lavender oil. Sprinkle the mixture over the mattress and vacuum it after an hour. Do this twice a year. The best way to get rid of the smell caused by sweat in your sneakers it to sprinkle baking soda inside the shoes and leave it like that until the next use. Tap it out before using them again. Baking soda will absorb the bad odor.
